San Francisco Bay Area weather: what to expect
Heard about those crazy Californians who swim outdoors in the winter and put a jacket
on in the summer? Here's what to expect when visiting Northern California.
If you're coming to the Bay Area in the spring for short course Far Westerns in Morgan Hill or for another meet, daytime highs in late March-early April typically range from 65 to 70 degrees F. Although most days are sunny this time of year, rain is not out of the question. Our major meets this time of year are held outdoors, so be prepared!
If you're coming during the summer for the Santa Clara International, Western Zones, or another of our major midsummer meets, summer weather in the Santa Clara/San Jose area is usually very comfortable: sunny, highs around 80 degrees F, not at all humid, cool in the evenings with lows in the 50's.
If you're headed for a summer meet in the East Bay cities of Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, or Orinda, the daily high is more likely to be in the mid-to-high 80's, with the same low humidity and cool evening temperatures.
In the summer, expect a breeze in the late afternoon anywhere in the greater San Francisco Bay Area which may require warmups or sweats for comfort at finals. Rain is extremely unlikely this time of year in any part of our territory.
If you're visiting us during the summer, however, don't be fooled when you plan your visit to downtown San Francisco! Although the rest of the Bay Area is comfortably warm this time of year, daytime highs in The City are usually in the 60s, and clouds, fog, and a stiff afternoon breeze are much more likely, especially in the western half of The City and by the Golden Gate Bridge. If you don't have a sweater, you might regret it. (This same warning applies to Santa Cruz, Monterey, or any other spot adjacent to the Pacific Ocean.)
